We work from our home in the hills of southwestern
New Hampshire, with 95% of our business being
via the Internet. While we have no particular
specialties, our focus is on non-technical non-fiction
(History, Biography, Travel, Natural History, Maritime,
etc.), with smatterings in The Arts, Religion, Science,
and First Edition Literature.
We would be happy to send you either an email or a hard copy
catalogue of our current inventory in any of 100 different
categories. Please email us with your particular fields of
interest, and we'll send you a listing right away.
Also, we offer a 20% discount on orders of 3 or more books.
Our Books
These are a couple of representative shelves
of our inventory. We have very little that's
old or rare, but we learned early on the value
of condition and edition. To that end, 90% of
our stock is 1st printings in dustjackets, and it
all looks pretty much like this. (One area of
exception, however, is the group of books we
have on consignment from a retiring colleague.
For a variety of reasons (age, care through the
years, scarcity), many of these consigned books
are not in tip-top shape. These books will almost
always be indicated as consigned in the listings.)
Our philosophy
of bookselling (BS'ing for short)
involves a combination of Kantian Metaphysics,
Keynesian Economics, and Keseyan Psychedelics,
which we hope you'll take to heart. In other words,
we want you to say, "Oh, wow! A good book at
a good price! What a trip!" (Ok, that's not quite
where Keynes was coming from, but J. C. Penney's
just didn't do the trick!)
We've been selling books since 1984, first in a storefront
in Seattle, and for the past 10 years through the mail
and the Internet in Seattle and New Hampshire.
We are acutely aware that we're in competition for
your business with about 10,000 other bookdealers, so
while we will not always have the absolute best copy at
the absolute best price, we will generally be competitive.
We also know that it can be daunting to buy a book
sight unseen on the 'Net, so we try to describe an item's
condition fully and conservatively. We Brodart all
dustjackets, we ship promptly, and we make sure every
book that leaves here is shipped in a box. We accept
returns for any or no reason, and are somewhat proud
of the fact that our return rate is less than one book in a
thousand. That's not to say we haven't made a few more
mistakes than that, but we're generally able to work things
out to everyone's satisfaction.
Usual Terms and Shipping Charges:
-
Our usual terms are payment with order,
(institutions accommodated), with any item
being returnable for any or no reason, with
phone notice. All books are subject to prior
sale, prices are net to all, and we don't hold
'on spec' for booksearch services.
-
On orders of 3 or more books to one address,
we offer a 20% discount.
-
Postal rates increased July 1, 2002, and in some cases have gone up
enormously. For Media Mail we charge $3 for books with a shipping weight
of up to 4 pounds. Priority Mail is $5.00 OR AT COST, WHICHEVER IS
GREATER. For example, a 2 pound book to the West Coast is now $5.75; a
4 pound book to the West Coast is now $10.35 (up from $6.45, and more
than it would cost us to ship it airmail to Japan--go figure!). If your
order doesn't fit neatly into the parameters, we'll be in touch.
-
International Orders:
Happy to oblige! We prefer to work with credit cards
internationally, but will do U S $ checks as well.
(Other currencies carry such high exchange charges
for us that we pretty much have to limit ourselves to
these methods.) We much prefer to send Global
Priority Mail for those books that will fit in the special
flat rate envelope ($9.00), to those countries where
the service is available. For surface mail and other air,
we'll have to quote shipping.
