This is an unusual and rare hand painted hand decorated embossed cookie plate. This is an early example of RS (Rheinhold Schlegelmilch) Prussia, and we have access to other items decorated in the same embossed manner on the same molding shown in the Marple price guides. It measures about 10-3/8" across, not including the handles. The plate itself has a pattern in relief that looks like a sunflower center with swirls leading out to the edge. Around the edges are small 1/2 flowers. Pardon any and all flash glares, the painting is not worn. If you have access to THE FORMATIVE YEARS by LEE & CAROL MARPLE, please see page 54, upper left hand corner. That is the mold of this plate. A gold embossed ship decoration is shown in cobalt on page 47, valued at 250.00 in 2002, but that is a different and smaller ship. This plate was made perhaps as a souvenir to commemorate a wonderful ship. We have dealt with RS Prussia for years, and I can honestly say I have never seen this plate before. There are post cards of the red bottomed ship very similar to this depiction in the plate, but I have yet to exactly name the ship, as the sails make the plate and ship older than WW1. The plate is unmarked and in excellent condition. As a one of a kind item, collectible to many, I offer this just in time for Yuletide gift giving. Please be sure to take the time to see all the pictures. If you look closely, you will see the sky is either a sunset or a sunrise, with a lovely blush on the horizon. Some puffy peach colored clouds are in the sky, and a light breeze keeps the flags unfurled. A quote from an ocean liner expert: "The ship is almost certainly in either the Hamburg-Amerika Line or the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line fleets. It probably also dates from the mid-1880's. (The ship, not necessarily the plate... however, since this type of commemorative plate would probably be produced only for a special event like a ship's maiden voyage, I would tend to date the plate to the time of the ship's introduction into service.) The reason I date the ship so is by comparing it with other ships of the period. She is certainly younger than the four-masted steamers of the 1870's, and yet she relies too heavily on sail to be of the Campania/Lucania era of the 1890's. German shipyards of the day commonly ordered their crack liners from the shipyards of Great Britain, so comparing her to British ships of the day is not out of order. In fact, she looks very much like the Cunarders Etruria or the Aurania, which were built in Scotland." J. Kent Layton
